Located in the heart of downtown New York City, the Center for Jewish History (CJH) offers incredible insight into one of the most persevering cultures throughout the ages. The center's dynamic array of exhibitions, cultural events, and public programming has been dedicated to serve the historical, cultural, and educational interests of its American and international communities. With nearly 100 million archival documents, a half-million books, and countless photographs, artifacts, and artwork, the center is the largest repository outside of Israel to document the Jewish experience.
More than just a well-stocked museum or research center, the CJH incorporates the partnership of five major institutions of Jewish scholarship, art, and history: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Catalogued throughout the center's reading room are numerous rare collections of the constituent organizations. Many such materials, which include rare books and periodicals, art and artifacts, photographs, personal papers, and organizational records, are one-of-a-kind items found nowhere else.
The American Jewish Historical Society is the world's leading institution for the collection and preservation of original materials documenting the Jewish experience in the Americas from the 1500s. The American Sephardi Federation (ASF) is an umbrella organization that represents the diverse spectrum of Sephardic Jews in the United States. The Leo Baeck Institute is a research, study, and lecture center whose library and archives offer the most comprehensive documentation for the study of German Jewish history. The Yeshiva University Museum collects and preserves an incredible range of objects that reflect Jewish culture, including ceremonial pieces, fine and folk art, textiles, rare books, manuscripts, photographs, ethnographic material, and ephemera. YIVO is the preeminent center for the study of East European Jewry and Yiddish language, literature, and folklore, containing the world's largest collection of Yiddish books, documents, and other artifacts related to the history of East European Jewry.
