Built in 1923, with a unique neo-Moorish-style façade, the City Center was originally a meeting hall for members of the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. After the building came under city ownership, it was transformed into Manhattan's first performing arts center, a 2,750-seat venue for theater, music, and dance.
City Center is home to numerous renowned performing arts companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and American Ballet Theatre. It is also home to the Manhattan Theatre Club and a wide array of special events. As there are so many different companies that perform at the Center, it is vital to check performance schedules accordingly before visiting.
