One of the finest dance companies in the world, the American Ballet Theatre has toured the United States (hitting all 50 states) since its inception in 1940, performing for more than 600,000 people annually - one of the few major cultural institutions to do so. In addition, ABT has toured internationally to 42 countries and on many such occasions has been sponsored by the U.S. State Department. The ABT is committed to bringing the finest in dance to the widest international audience possible and has enjoyed successes with engagements in Tokyo, London, Paris, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Palermo.
The American Ballet Theatre moves into the Metropolitan Opera House every spring, combining contemporary works with many of the classics. During the summer, the theater itself welcomes numerous international companies on a regular basis. As such, the ABT allows audiences to take in a diverse amount of ballet at the same institution, an enticing quality for the tourist and resident alike.
